SAP Fiori for Utilities from Sapphire 2016

SAP Fiori for Utilities: Lessons from SAPPHIRE 2016 That Still Apply Today

Back at SAPPHIRE 2016, Mindset co-hosted a standing-room-only session on SAP Fiori for Utilities with Metropolitan Utilities District (M.U.D.) of Omaha—the fifth-largest public natural gas utility in the United States, serving over 600,000 people across the Omaha metro area.

The room was packed. People were standing in the back. And afterward, we fielded dozens of requests to share the presentation.

While the technology has evolved significantly since 2016, the core principles we discussed remain foundational to any successful SAP Fiori implementation in the utilities space. Here’s a deeper look at what we covered—and why it still matters.

Why Fiori Matters for Utilities

Utilities face unique challenges that make user experience critical:

  • Field crews need instant access to asset information, work orders, and safety data—often in remote locations with limited connectivity
  • Customer service representatives must navigate complex billing scenarios, meter data, and service requests while maintaining call efficiency
  • Meter readers require mobile-first interfaces that minimize data entry errors and maximize route efficiency
  • Operations managers need real-time visibility into outages, service backlogs, and resource allocation

Traditional SAP GUI interfaces weren’t designed for these realities. SAP Fiori changed that by introducing role-based, task-focused applications that work across devices.

The Shift from Function-Based to Role-Based

One of the most significant concepts we discussed was the fundamental shift in SAP’s user experience philosophy. Classic SAP interfaces were organized around functions and transactions—users had to know which T-code to run for each task.

SAP Fiori flipped this approach. Instead of asking “What transaction do I need?”, users see applications organized around their role and the tasks they perform daily. A meter data specialist sees apps for periodic meter reading overview, meter reading validation, and consumption analysis—not a list of transaction codes.

This role-based approach delivers immediate benefits:

  • Reduced training time: New employees can be productive faster because the interface is intuitive
  • Lower error rates: Task-focused apps guide users through processes step-by-step
  • Mobile enablement: The same apps work on desktops, tablets, and smartphones
  • Higher adoption: When software is easy to use, people actually use it

Key Use Cases for Utilities

During the session, we explored several high-value Fiori use cases that M.U.D. and other utilities were implementing:

Field Service and Work Order Management

Field technicians need to access work orders, asset history, safety documentation, and technical schematics—often while standing at a job site. Fiori apps enable crews to:

  • View and update work order status in real-time
  • Access equipment specifications and maintenance history
  • Capture photos and notes directly in the system
  • Record time and materials on mobile devices
  • Receive push notifications for urgent assignments

Meter Reading and Data Management

Mobile meter reading apps eliminate paper-based processes and reduce data entry errors. Technicians can:

  • Follow optimized routes on their devices
  • Enter readings with built-in validation to flag anomalies
  • Capture photos of hard-to-read meters
  • Handle exceptions and skip codes in the field
  • Sync data automatically when connectivity is available

Customer Service Operations

Customer service representatives benefit from unified views that combine billing, meter data, service history, and account information. Fiori’s embedded analytics enable agents to:

  • See account status and payment history at a glance
  • Analyze consumption patterns to answer customer questions
  • Process service requests without switching screens
  • Access KPIs like accounts billed, open service orders, and overdue balances

Outage Management

When outages occur, speed matters. Fiori apps integrated with GIS systems enable operations teams to:

  • Identify affected assets and customers quickly
  • Dispatch crews with complete information
  • Track restoration progress in real-time
  • Communicate with affected customers proactively

Building a Successful Fiori Delivery Team

One topic that resonated strongly with the audience was our discussion of how to structure a Fiori implementation team. Success requires a blend of skills:

  • UX Design expertise: Understanding user needs through research, personas, and journey mapping
  • SAPUI5 development skills: Building and customizing Fiori apps
  • SAP Gateway/OData knowledge: Creating the services that connect Fiori apps to backend systems
  • IS-U functional expertise: Understanding utility-specific processes and data models
  • Change management: Driving adoption and managing the transition from SAP GUI

We also emphasized the importance of starting with Design Thinking—understanding user pain points before jumping into development. The utilities that achieved the best results were those that invested time in user research and prototyping.

What’s Changed Since 2016

While the core principles remain relevant, much has evolved:

  • SAP S/4HANA for Utilities now provides hundreds of native Fiori apps purpose-built for the industry
  • SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP) enables custom extensions while maintaining a clean core
  • SAP Build allows citizen developers to create Fiori apps with low-code tools
  • Joule AI brings conversational AI directly into the Fiori Launchpad
  • Mobile solutions like SAP Field Service Management provide comprehensive field workforce enablement

The destination has changed, but the journey starts in the same place: understanding your users and designing experiences that make their work easier.
