Future of HANA Cloud Platform and Internet of things

The future of the Manufacturing Industry is undoubtedly driven by automation. In manufacturing lingo, it is called “Industry 4.0”. This paradigm shift in the industry has propelled the growth of the Internet of Things. The cost of manufacturing a sensor has rapidly decreased over time, leading to an opportunity for greater adoption of these devices. SAP continues to evolve their products in this space to enable enterprises to accomplish their IoT journey. During my recent visit to SAP Labs – Palo Alto for IoT Hackathon workshop I had an opportunity to represent Mindset and take a dive into upcoming offerings from SAP in this space.

Cloud Foundry

As the first step in this direction SAP HCP’s will adopt cloud foundry. Now the question which comes to all of our minds is “What does this mean for my enterprise?” For many of the web developers who would love to work with big data components like Mango DB, Postgre SQL, Cassandra, Kafka, Rabbit MQ, etc., the good news is just around the corner. Integration with these components would be seamlessly possible with HCP’s inclusion of cloud foundry.

Smart Data Streaming

As we all know how fast and efficient HANA is, we also acknowledge the fact that it is expensive. In fact, the cost of adoption of HANA is a strong determinant in the decision to adopt HANA. With Smart Data streaming via HCP one could now determine the data which they would like to persist. We would be able to configure alerts, trigger events and even filters on the data engine. This leads to the reduced usage of the HANA database.

Addition of new runtimes

The current version of HCP does support Java, HTML, and HANA XS. And with the addition of cloud foundry, we would be able to add more runtimes to the list including Node.Js and Python to name a few. Imagine the window of opportunities that would open to developers familiar with other frameworks. For example, a developer could deploy an application and Scala component to HCP and work on the Big data analysis seamlessly.

YAAS Microservices

Coming from the product line of SAP Hybris these business services enable enterprises to build a new breed of product offerings. Imagine you are building a Shopping cart catalog for your e-commerce business. With SAP Microservices you would be able to develop a web application or a mobile application in no time. Guess what, the user could start their shopping experience on a Desktop and complete it on Mobile. The component of SAP which makes this possible is YAAS. The enterprise can leverage the individual components like Microservices for taxes, shopping cart, etc. and seamlessly integrate them with their business applications.

Acquisition of PLAT.ONE

The biggest move by SAP in recent times is it’s $2 Billion acquisition of PLAT.ONE, the Italian market leader in the IoT space. PLAT.ONE not only provides a device agnostic platform but also tightly couples with the micro-service architecture from SAP Hybris. Platone’s code line would form the base for all future SAP IoT offerings, thus creating the next generation IoT services from SAP.

Data centers

Lastly, for those of us who have been running our applications from external data centers from Amazon WS, the good news is we would be able to use these non-SAP data centers seamlessly with the cloud foundry initiative.

The journey in IoT space seems both promising and challenging. If you would like to embark your journey toward digital transformation now would be the time to get started.
